2009 Guajiras Schedule
ALL TUITION IS NON-REFUNDABLE AND
NON-TRANSFERABLE.
ALL TUESDAY CLASSES HELD AT SEVERAL DANCERS
CORE. WEEKEND INTENSIVE HELD AT DECATUR BALLET &
GUITAR DECATUR. ALL VENUES ARE IN DOWNTOWN DECATUR.
Call or send
an e-mail for more information and to register.
Note, this will be a small workshop, so spaces for
guitarists, singers and dancers are extremely limited.
This 10-week session kicks off with a weekend
intensive taught by Marija Temo, who plays flamenco guitar, sings
flamenco and can also dance flamenco. WOW! All this in one
person?! Yes, and to you it means: Marija can teach you how to use
in a live flamenco setting (AKA cuadro) the steps, chords, songs, technique, etc. that you have spent time
learning. Thus, you gain the knowledge needed to become an
accompanist - as a dancer, a guitarist or a singer - in
flamenco.
We'll have her for two days on July 18 & 19 to
get introduced to guajiras, a love-infused palo with origins in Cuba,
as well as Spain. She'll teach the guitarists how to do
their thing while the dancers and singers watch, taking in
knowledge *about* how to play guitar, but not necessarily learning
to do it themselves. Then, Marija will teach the singers how
to do their thing, again with the guitarists and dancers looking
on. Then, the guitarists, singers and dancers (who already
have a bag of tricks from weekly class), will get together for a
"cuadro class," in which they'll work together to create
flamenco in the live environment. We'll all be equipped for
the cuadro class, because we've cross-trained (albeit on a broad
level) by watching the "other classes." And, yes,
if you want to learn to do more than one thing, you
can! Take this opportunity to learn to dance - and sing -
guajiras. Or play - and dance - guajiras. or play -
and sing - guajiras. Or go for the Marija Temo approach and
set your sights on all 3! (smile)

about Marija Temo >>
Following the intensive, we'll continue practicing,
as a group, Marija's lessons in weekly Tuesday night classes, plus we'll add
to it until we have a full piece that we will perform in Sept. and
Oct. This is not a flamenco dance class - it's a flamenco
class. Dancers will use a fan and should provide their own
fans. Inquire for assistance with ordering a
fan. (NOTE: Performance is NOT a requirement of the
course.) Tues. classes meet at 8-9:30 PM at Several Dancers
Core. Inquire about directions & free parking.
Tuition for the 10-week course + the intensive is
$250. Sorry, there is no partial tuition. There will
be live accompanists in Tuesday classes.
